First, Rule Out These Simple Causes
No power
Check the plug, the outlet, and the breaker. Openers often sit on a ceiling outlet that is easy to forget.
The wall panel lock
Many wall panels have a lock button. If pressed, remotes stop working. Press it again.
Dead remote battery
Replace the coin battery in the remote and in the keypad.
Photo eye sensors
Since 1993, U.S. safety rules (UL 325) require sensors near the floor on both sides of the door. If a sensor is dirty, bumped, or blocked, the door will not close. Wipe each lens and make sure both lights are steady.
Disconnected trolley
If someone pulled the red cord, the opener runs but the door does not move. Reconnect the trolley to the door arm.
Problems That Need a Contractor
The motor hums but the door will not move
Often a broken spring, a stripped drive gear, or a bad trolley. See spring repair.
The door reverses before it closes
Usually a sensor or limit setting issue.
Loud grinding or shaking
Worn chain, belt, or screw drive, or loose rail bolts.
The opener works only sometimes
A failing logic board, a weak remote signal, or loose wiring.
Chain, Belt, and Screw Drive Openers
| Type | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Chain drive | Strong, lower cost | Louder |
| Belt drive | Quiet | Higher cost |
| Screw drive | Few moving parts | Can be noisy in cold or damp air |
| Wall mount (jackshaft) | Frees ceiling space, quiet | Higher cost, needs a torsion door |
Repair or Replace?
Repair makes sense when the problem is a sensor, a remote, a gear, or a belt. Replace the opener when it is more than about 10 to 15 years old, lacks safety sensors, uses parts the maker no longer sells, or needs a repair that costs close to half of a new unit.
